Hand Dancing Practice Demo

 What is Hand Dancing?

Hand Dance is an ever evolving swing partner dance that is based on a six-count, eight-step pattern (as in Shag) to an eight-count, ten-step pattern (as in the whip in West Coast Swing) with variations thereof to music played at 4/4 time.  Unlike Shag or West Coast Swing, Hand Dance is a spot dance, which means the dance uses varying slots, as it is neither linear nor circular.  This approach opens up more possibilities within the dance and makes it more flexible, dynamic and creative.

When you dance, your purpose is not to get to a certain place on the floor. It's to enjoy each step along the way.

Hand Dancing is a beautiful blossoming art form of communication that is just as lovely to watch, as it is to perform. Although in performing, the conversation takes on a whole new meaning.  When done properly, the conversation of the dance can place in a variety of enjoyable situations, such as action and adventure, thrills, and even romance.  As you lose yourself in music and your inner expressions began to shine
through, the problems of this world seem so far away. The fun and exhilaration of hand dancing just take over.
As Hand Dancing begins to grow, it is time for the Hampton Roads, Tidewater area (Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Newport News, Hampton, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Poquoson, and Williamsburg)

to add its flare and flavor to the dance.  Just as Chicago has Steppin and Detroit has Urban Ballroom, Hand Dancing encompasses all of that, even West Coast Swing and Shag, as they all have their roots from Lindy Hop and the Jitterbug, showcased as the Savoy.  Over the years the dance has changed a little, as music has changed and the culture has changed, but in learning and knowing the basics, bridges over the gaps are made, allowing the dance to be danced across all age groups.
Learning to Hand Dance may take time, but it can be done and is more than well worth the effort for many reasons.  Dancing makes you smarter, wards off Alzheimer's disease (and other dementia), and increases cognitive acuity at all ages.  It relieves stress and mentally places you in a better state of mind. But most of all, it is about you having fun, laughing, smiling, and just having a good old time.
